Memories of Richard (Dick) Brown
Our Dad passed away peacefully on Wednesday evening, July 20, 2011. Dad was 91 when he died. Beverly, our mother, and his loving wife of 61 years, preceded him in death.
Dad entered the US Army February 1941. He served in the South Pacific in WWII. His campaigns included Guadalcanal, New Guinea, Northern Solomon's and Luzon Philippines.
He earned the following decorations:
Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with 4 battle stars
Good Conduct Medal
American Defense Service Ribbon
In 1955, thanks to Aunt Barbara Patterson, Dad's sister, and his own foresight, he moved us from Augusta, Maine to Manhattan Beach, California. It has something to do with the winter of 1954...it took him 3 days to shovel snow out of the driveway...not to mention the freezing cold winter temperatures.
Some of Dad's favorite hobbies included hunting, fishing, amateur ham radio operator, amateur TV repairman, watching the L.A. Dodgers and an avid PC user.
Dad also had a great sense of humor too. Of course whenever he told a story, due to his slow speech, my mother would always say, "Get to the point Richard"!
Dad was a good man, husband, father and friend...he will be missed, that's for sure.
